Chinese Judges briefed by CIArb

29th June 2006 – Today, a delegation of senior PRC judges were welcome visitors to the CIArb’s Secretariat in Bloomsbury Square, London.

At the meeting, hosted by Hew Dundas, CIArb Deputy President, the judges from Beijing’s High Court and its First and Second Intermediate Courts, together with representatives from Beijing Arbitration Commission and Mr Tao Jingzhou of DLA Piper (organisers of the visit) met a team from the CIArb to discuss the court's respective approaches to arbitration cases in England and Wales and in the PRC. Detailed discussion covered the validity and enforceability of arbitration clauses, and appeals against and enforceability of awards. The CIArb, reinforcing its status as a Learned Society and centre of knowledge, handed over a detailed analysis of the last 18 months of English jurisprudence. In addition, a presentation was made of the CIArb’s work, in particular concerning its activities in China and the East Asian region.

The visit of Mr Tao Jingzhou, Managing Partner of DLA’s Beijing office, a globally recognised expert in international arbitration and Member of the ICC Court, was perfectly timed. At the close of the meeting, Hew Dundas was able to pass on the good news (pictured right) that Mr Tao had been successful in his recent assessment for the most highly prized global recognition of practitioners - Chartered Arbitrator status.
