CIArb helps raise the bar in China

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the professional home of international dispute resolvers, is hosting senior members of CIETAC (Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission) in London on 10th May, 2002. Arbitration and Mediation have a long and successful history in China and CIETAC is the leading chamber in China for the handling of disputes arising out of contracts entered into between Chinese and non Chinese companies.

Earlier this year, CIArb President, Karen Gough, led a CIArb delegation to Beijing to promote closer relations with CIETAC. This reciprocal visit by CIETAC will carry forward the Beijing discussions and the plans to develop a joint programme of ongoing training and education in China and the UK directed at Chinese and UK dispute resolvers.

China is playing an increasingly important role in international trade and following its accession to the WTO and its successful bid to host the Olympic Games, there is a growing demand in China for arbitrators and mediators to resolve commercial disputes. The CIArb, who set the international benchmark for the training and professional qualification of dispute resolvers, will be working with CIETAC to organise training programmes in China to produce globally-acknowledged, independent, qualified arbitrators.
