CIArb sets the benchmark for Russian arbitrationOn the 16th May, The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), in partnership with the Anglo-Russian Law Association, will facilitate the training of more than 30 Russian lawyers in international arbitration.
The seminar, titled "Russian Related International Commercial Arbitration", will follow on from the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress, a bi-annual event hosted this year by the CIArb at the Royal Lancaster Hotel from 12th to 15th of May 2002. The aim of the seminar is to provide the necessary training and assessment for Russian lawyers hoping to achieve Associate membership of the CIArb, thereby paving the way to becoming fully qualified CIArb arbitrators.
Dair Farrar-Hockley, Director General of the Chartered Institute, said "The seminar is the first practical step in a 3 to 5 year joint programme with our partners at the Anglo-Russian Law Association. The programme is aimed at developing more world class arbitrators in Russia and in helping to enhance the value and use of private dispute resolution for commercial organisations trading there."
Secretary General of the Anglo-Russian Law Association, David Goldberg, comments: "We are delighted to join forces with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators on this important project for both countries and we look forward to building a strong long term relationship with the Institute".
Some of Russia's most senior arbitrators will be speaking at the seminar. Topics for discussion will include; applying foreign law in proceedings in Russia, UNCITRAL Model Law and the Law of the Russian Federation on International Commercial Arbitration, comparative overview of Russian Law on domestic and international arbitration, and the 1958 New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards.
Due to Russia's continuing economic development and increasingly important role in international trade there is a growing demand in Russia for arbitrators to resolve commercial disputes. With the Institute's status as the leading international provider of qualifications for arbitrators and other dispute resolvers and with over 10,000 members in 86 countries, CIArb is uniquely positioned to enable the development of arbitration standards in Russia, thereby enabling the country to further develop as a viable territory for inward investment.
About the Anglo-Russian Law Association The Anglo-Russian Law Association was established as a voluntary self-governing membership organisation in 1996 and was registered in London as a company limited by guarantee in September 1997. Establishing and promoting links between legal professions in Britain and Eastern Europe is amongst the objectives of the Association.
