Mediation Experts Speak at CIArb Seminar

On 11 June 2007, t he CIArb hosted an interactive seminar, ‘Mediation - the Experts Speak’, a major follow up to the first edition of the CIArb’s re-launched journal, ‘ Arbitration: The International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management’. The event provided a valuable opportunity for delegates to discuss mediation with the contributors to the February 2007 journal, which focused on mediation.

The seminar, chaired by the CIArb’s immediate Past President, Colin J Wall, took place at the CIArb’s head office in Bloomsbury Square, London and attracted leading academics, current and future practitioners, party advisors and members of the judiciary. Topics included:

  • ‘Mediation and its future prospects’, by Sir Brian Neill MCIArb;
  • ‘The Skills of Excellent and Effective Mediators’, by Amanda Bucklow MCIArb;
  • ‘Confidentiality and the EU Directive’, by Michel Kallipetis FCIArb
  • ‘The Role of the Mediation Advocate’, by Craig Pollock;
  • ‘ADR in Nigeria’, by Paul Oboarenegbe Idornigie MCIArb; and
  • ‘Commercial Mediation: the Impact of the Courts’ by David Cornes FCIArb

The seminar closed with a fascinating debate on “Wither Confidentiality” between Michel Kallipetis and Alan Limbury FCIArb.

Commenting on the success of the seminar, Michael Forbes Smith, Director General the CIArb said,

“The mediation seminar showcased the depth of international knowledge the CIArb holds. The topics covered were thought provoking and received with great interest. This reinforces the CIArb’s position at the forefront of thought leadership in private dispute resolution. The CIArb is uniquely placed as the professional home for all private dispute resolvers across the globe and this is just one of the many events the CIArb is holding to share the views and thoughts of a highly regarded and knowledgeable membership.”
