Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Facilitate Networking Groups in China

02 January 2007 - The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the international membership organisation of excellence for private dispute resolution, has set up networking groups in China, similar to the CIArb Chapters recently formed in Japan and Indonesia. Immediate Past President, Colin J Wall and Hew R Dundas, President for 2007, made the trip to Beijing to welcome current members and to proffer their support and best wishes for the future. Colin J Wall also made a separate trip to attend the inaugural event for the networking group in Shanghai.

The groups will enable CIArb members to network with each other, communicate more effectively with the Hong Kong-based, East Asia Branch and to discuss matters of mutual interest related to arbitration and other means of private dispute resolution.

To mark the launch, the CIArb held receptions in both locations, welcoming many distinguished members of China’s arbitration community. Among the many eminent guests present at the Beijing launch were Professor Tang Houzhi, Honorary Vice-Chairman of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC, Mr. Yu Jianlong and Secretary-General of the Beijing Arbitration Commission, Mme. Wang Hongsong, as well as an array of representatives from local and international law firms and the business community.

Commenting, Hew R Dundas, President of the CIArb, said:
“The East Asia Branch has been instrumental in setting up the networking centres in Beijing and Shanghai, and many thanks go to Mr. Tony Houghton and Mr. Colin Wall for their efforts in helping to develop other formal and informal Chapters around the region. Finally, a big thank you is due to Ms. Helen Shi of Fangda Partners, whose assistance made the first meeting of the new informal Beijing Chapter such a tremendous success and to Mr. Terence Wong, who likewise organised the inaugural meeting in Shanghai.”
