CIArb become locals in Indonesia

November 2006 - Today, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the international organisation of excellence for private dispute resolution, announced the establishment and inauguration of the Indonesian Chapter of the East Asia Branch. To mark the occasion, CIArb held a conference at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta to address the influential role arbitration plays in dispute resolution, followed by an arbitration course held at the same venue.

The conference included an address by Frans Hendra Winarta, one of Indonesia’s leading reformist lawyers, on the need for better dispute resolution in Indonesia in light of continuing problems in the judicial system, followed by three panel discussions with Indonesian and international experts covering:

  • The role of arbitral institutions
  • How arbitrators deal with corruption
  • Conflicts of interest and independence of arbitrators and expert witnesses

Commenting, Colin Wall, President of CIArb said:

“I am delighted to have had the opportunity to be here for the inauguration of the Indonesian Chapter. The opening of the CIArb’s latest Chapter, reinforces its position as the only global professional home for those involved in dispute resolution. We hope that members will become actively involved and use the Chapter as a channel to network, discuss, and influence all issues surrounding dispute resolution.”

The Conference, which was organised by KarimSyah Law Firm, was opened by Supreme Court Justice, Mieke Komar and Colin Wall, the President of the Institute. The Minister of Justice, Hamid Awaluddin, was unable to attend, but in his letter of regret, he made clear his support and appreciation for the Chapter. Colin Wall addressed the importance of education in arbitration and inaugurated the Indonesian Chapter. The following day, Colin Wall, together with KarimSyah’s Karen Mills, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Chief Justice of the Indonesian Supreme Court, and they and several other Supreme Court Justices discussed expanding the cooperation to enhance education of the judiciary about arbitration and ADR.
