Chartered Institute of Arbitrators holds Presidential Handover for 200704 January 2007 - Today, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the international membership organisation of excellence for private dispute resolution, held a ceremony to mark the official handover of the Presidency of the CIArb, installing Hew R Dundas as the President of the Institute for 2007 . The handover, which took place at the Institute’s Bloomsbury Square offices in London, saw Hew assume the presidency from Colin J Wall, President for 2006 .
Hew Dundas is a Scottish-resident Chartered Arbitrator and former prize-winning Fellow of the CIArb, currently practicing domestically and internationally as a full-time Sole Practitioner in Dispute Resolution. His previous career includes acting as an International Petroleum Lawyer and Risk Management Consultant following over 20 years in the oil & gas industry. Hew was also General Manager Legal, Company Secretary and Group Insurance Manager for Cairn Energy PLC (now a FTSE 100 company), where he was responsible for projects worth up to $500 million and corporate takeovers in several countries.
Commenting, Hew Dundas, President of the CIArb, said: “I am greatly honoured and privileged to have been elected by the CIArb membership as President for 2007. I am very keen and highly motivated to undertake the role and responsibilities immediately. The Institute is charged by its Royal Charter to set and maintain standards, and to educate and advise its members and the public on private dispute resolution. I will continue the valuable work of the Institute and will reinforce its position as a learned society.”
Commenting, Michael Forbes Smith, Director General CIArb, said: I am delighted at the investiture of Hew Dundas as President of the Institute for 2007. Hew was elected by the membership for good reason. I know that he will not only carry out the required presidential duties but will exceed them.”
As President, Hew’s specific duties will be guided by the Institute’s ten-year strategic plan . However, the overriding duties of the President include, on a worldwide basis, promoting and communicating the benefits of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR); encouraging dispute resolvers to become professionally qualified to ensure that standards are protected ; maintaining the Institute’s position as a resource centre and professional home for its members on all forms of private dispute resolution; as well as educating the general public on, and promoting the benefits of private dispute resolution.
