Professional recognition

Our members are leaders in their fields, whether working in dispute resolution practice or in business. The CIArb is the most important international professional body, which sets global standards in arbitration, mediation, adjudication and the other forms of private dispute resolution.

Our latest membership survey shows that professional qualifications and standards are the single key reason for joining the CIArb. Membership affords a prestigious secondary qualification to a diverse group of professionals from a wide-range of primary professions in thousands of organisations, large and small. Half of these are based in the UK, the other half live and work in more than 130 different countries across the globe, demonstrating that the CIArb qualifications are internationally recognised and valued.

Access to education & training worldwide

We offer top quality continuing professional development to help you get and stay ahead of your peers. Accessible to all our members, our training courses are held worldwide, to help maintain assured global standards for practitioners.

Many branches have a programme of training sessions and stage mock arbitrations or surgeries to share experience and expertise among their members. Current listings are published on this website and in our quarterly newsletter.

A thriving network of branches

As the most international professional dispute resolution body in the world, our regional and international networks offer unparalleled opportunities for professional networking and career development.

In a recent survey our members told us that one of the key benefits of membership was the opportunity to attend the branch meetings. These lively meetings, held worldwide, usually provide one or more topical speakers and update sessions, followed by the chance to socialise with members from a broad spectrum of disciplines and professions.

CIArb journal, “Arbitration”

Our expertise leads academic and professional thinking in dispute resolution. This comes directly to you in a leading academic journal, “Arbitration.” A lively editorial focuses on current issues in arbitration and other forms of private dispute resolution. The journal is published quarterly and all our members have a free subscription as part of their membership benefits.

Practitioner resources

A number of resources are available on our website including articles, papers, case law, CIArb regulations and reports. Available electronically without charge, our Guidelines, Code and dispute resolution clauses are reviewed regularly to ensure a modern approach in a changing dispute resolution landscape. These serve as a guide to practitioners as well as a point of reference for users of these processes and increase public and business confidence in private dispute resolution processes. Please contact the membership team if you have difficulty logging into the Members’ Section of the website or downloading any of the resources.

The Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct

The CIArb maintains the highest standards of professional conduct in the practice of private dispute resolution and ensures that the overall reputation of the profession is enhanced for the future. The Code ensures an appropriate approach to ethics.

Practice Guidelines

The Guidelines draw upon the latest thinking from some of the world’s leading practitioners. They address sensitive issues arising in private dispute resolution, ensuring best practice from our members even in the most difficult situations.

Dispute Resolution Clauses

It is essential that businesses and individuals include appropriate clauses in their contracts to ensure that disputes are dealt with efficiently when they arise. The CIArb recommends a selection of clauses which members can benefit from either in their practice or as a user.

Email alerter service

The service was designed conjunction with leading online information service, Linex Legal to keep our members up-to-date with the latest developments in international arbitration and ADR. The weekly emails contain selected articles and reviews, covering international arbitration, mediation and other forms of ADR, written by leading specialists from around the globe. It is a particularly valuable benefit of membership which would not usually be offered free of charge. Please visit www.arbitrators.org/alerter.

Discussion and debate

Being a member of the CIArb means joining a global community of dispute resolution practitioners. We encourage our members to engage in ongoing discussion with colleagues from a broad spectrum of disciplines and professions to establish a common ground for understanding. In addition to providing up-to-date information, NewsWatch, a bi-monthly topical email is intended to stimulate lively debate on the discussion forum of our website. Please contact the membership team to subscribe to NewsWatch or if you have trouble logging in to the Members’ Section of the website.

In the Press

Through our contacts and influence, we can justly claim to be the voice of the profession internationally, representing views to governments and policy makers on issues affecting our members. We encourage our members to get involved by offering a range of media opportunities. Please contact the membership team to find out more about the opportunities available.
