CIArb celebrates 90 years by going global14th March 2005 - The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators celebrated its 90th birthday with a present from HM the Queen - a newly signed Charter giving the Institute the go-ahead to pursue its global strategy.
Signed at the end of February, the new Charter enabled the Institute to hold the inaugural meeting of its new Board of Trustees. Meeting in Cyprus on 1st March, the new Board is representative of the Institute's global positioning, with members from all five continents and seven different regions being elected. The meeting was followed by the Institute's first ever World Congress, with 35 trustees and branch chairmen attending to discuss a range of topics from training to promotion and membership growth.
The Institute now has nearly 11,000 members from more than 90 different countries in the world. The new Charter and Bye-laws have been specifically designed to enable the Institute to continue with its global expansion by moving to a democratically elected and representative structure of governance. The revisions have also streamlined decision-making, thus enhancing efficiency and allowing the Institute to cater for the changing needs of its members.
Dair-Farrar Hockley, director general of the Institute, said: " As the globe gets smaller and international boundaries become blurred, never before has there been such a need for internationally recognised alternative dispute resolution. Indeed, as more and more countries embark on international trade, sometimes across many different borders, then it is vital that there is a consistent, independent and fair way of dealing with disputes - one which is recognisable as such by all parties. The Chartered Institute has been providing such a service for 90 years, and this new charter is a demonstration of both our track record and an endorsement of our desire and commitment to continue to -promoting dispute resolution services across the world."
The new election process for the presidency enfranchised all CIArb members worldwide. The 12 candidates were from Australia, Austria, China, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Kenya and the UK. The following members have been elected as president for the next three years: Dr Eugen Salpius from Austria (2005), Colin Wall from Hong Kong (2006) and Hew Dundas from London (2007).
The 35 trustees and branch chairmen, including the Chairman of the Institute’s newest branch in the United Arab Emirates, travelled to the congress from 17 countries worldwide. Other countries represented included Australia, Bermuda, Cyprus, Ireland, Kenya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Thailand, Zimbabwe and the UK.
