Raising the Standard - the CIArb and MATA launch new Mediator training and Accreditation programme

-  Independent Panel of Assessors determines competence and whether Accredited Mediator Status has been achieved

June 30, 2004: The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), in association with Mediation And Training Alternatives (MATA), today announces the launch of a new Mediator Training and Accreditation Programme. The programme is uniquely designed to accelerate learning and to rapidly build a high level of knowledge, practical skill and experience in commercial mediation. It aims to ensure that those attending are both competent and confident to mediate in a variety of situations, including complex multi-party and highly emotive cases.

The main differentiator of the new course is the depth and quality the course offers. Each skill is unpacked, analysed and then practised in the context of increasingly complex mediations. The course creates a Learning Community, providing those attending with ongoing support, networking and the opportunity to continue developing and improving skills. The course is designed for those who are keen to become an Accredited Commercial Mediator, those who want to represent clients in Mediation and those who want to use Mediation Skills in their current profession.

Allan Connarty, director of operations at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators commented: “The Institute is delighted to launch this new course which builds on the reputation we have already established for high quality and comprehensive mediator training combined with independent accreditation.  David Richbell and his colleagues at MATA have developed a very focused learning programme, the UK's only full five-day day programme wholly devoted to skills acquisition and practice, whose students will role-play the full range of disputes from two-party, single issue through to multi-party multi-issue disputes whilst in the pure learning arena.”

The course is focused on developing the practical skills and techniques required to manage a mediation from initial instruction to conclusion. The students are individually coached throughout the training days. This includes working with emotion; questioning techniques; building rapport; time-limited mediation; multi-party and multi-issue cases; settlement agreements; evaluation in mediation and ethics and standards.

David Richbell and Jane Gunn, who are both very experienced commercial mediators and trainers, are leading an international team of highly experienced coaches, all of whom are practising mediators. The teaching faculty will provide ongoing mentoring and support for students through to their Accreditation Assessment.

A separate and completely independent Panel of Assessors determines whether students have achieved the competence for Accredited Mediator Status, i.e. they can “demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the skills and process of commercial mediation and an ability to use them effectively”.

About MATA

MATA (Mediation And Training Alternatives) was formed in January 2002. The purpose was to create a community-based business that is centred on commercial mediation, both in practice and in training and was also person-driven rather than profit-driven. Central to MATA's aims is the practice and training of people in dispute avoidance and in the positive approaches to conflict; and if problems do escalate into disputes, to manage and resolve the disputes quickly and cost-effectively without going to court. The MATA ethos is to create a Learning Community both during and after its training courses.
