Clayton Utz international arbitration specialist elected to top postMedia StatementClayton Utz international arbitration specialist elected to top postSydney, November 17 2005: Clayton Utz continues to consolidate its reputation as Australia's leading international dispute resolution firm with the election of Doug Jones AM as Chairman of the London-based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' Board of Trustees, effective from January 2006.
The appointment follows Mr Jones' election in January this year as the 12-member Board's only Australasian representative and the first Australian member. Other members represent the UK, East Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the Indian sub-continent. The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators was founded in 1915 with the aim of becoming the world's leading centre of excellence for the promotion and facilitation of dispute resolution. It has 10,500 members representing more than 90 countries, with membership based on an intensive accreditation process. In recognition of its increasingly international membership base, the Chartered Institute adopted a new constitution and Board structure earlier this year.
Mr Jones has acted as counsel and arbitrator in major international arbitrations and in 1999 was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to Dispute Resolution and Construction Law, recognising 30 years of contribution to these fields. Mr Jones' other appointments include the Australian Centre for Commercial Arbitration (Senior Vice-President) and the Asia-Pacific Council London Court of International Arbitration (Vice-President). Mr Jones is also a former Chairman of the Chartered Institute's Australian Branch.
