Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and PIM announce a partnership to offer the legal profession's most comprehensive range of dispute resolution services

Today, 16th July 2001, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the UK's leading independent body of qualified arbitrators, and the Panel of Independent Mediators (PIM), some of the UK's most experienced commercial mediators, announced a joint venture. This further builds on the Institute's continued strategy to provide its members with a full range of services, training and support in all forms of ADR including mediation.

PIM is a group of 11 of the UK's leading independent commercial mediators and, as part of the partnership with CIArb, will provide the highest standard of support and assistance to the Institute's strategic initiative into mediation. PIM have joined the Institute's Mediation Panel and will support mediation practice by the Institute nationally and internationally.

Phillip Howell-Richardson from PIM said, "As a Fellow of the Institute I have had first hand experience of the valuable work by the CIArb in developing high standards of training and professionalism for arbitrators and the international recognition of the status of Chartered Arbitrator. I and other members of PIM look forward to working with the Institute to create similar high and internationally recognised standards of training and accreditation for mediators and to the potential establishment of the status of Chartered Mediator.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators has been extending its dispute resolution activities. Since the change to the Institute's charter in 1999 it has committed to develop the use of mediation and alternative forms of dispute resolution, by establishing its own mediation training programmes and a mediation panel.

The CIArb recognises the need to provide the highest quality of mediation services and over recent years has grown from being a predominantly arbitration based organisation to providing a complete range of services to parties in dispute, outside litigation. The CIArb provides a one-stop shop for high quality private dispute resolution training and qualifications.

Dair Farrar-Hockley, Secretary General, CIArb said, "We are delighted by this partnership with PIM, who are widely acknowledged for their eminence in this field. In the Institute's view, the key issue in the whole process of dispute resolution is to find the most appropriate course of action to settle each individual dispute.

Mediation is an important tool in the family of private dispute resolution. This partnership can only enhance the Institute's drive into mediation."
