Growth in Mediation Demands Advanced Education Queen Mary University of London and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators launch the first post-graduate international mediation qualification
6 th October, 2005 - The Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) today announced a new post-graduate Diploma in International Mediation to meet the growing demand for qualified mediators and to raise educational standards worldwide.
Since the establishment of modern alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the 20 th century, lawyers and mediators have developed their own expertise from experience. There is currently a distinct and developing gap in the advanced education and training of practitioners and party advisors. As a result of the growth in international trade and the preference by many to mediate rather than litigate across borders, there is an increasing need for those involved in mediation to have appropriate professional and educational background. Until now all programmes have operated domestically.
The course is planned to begin in January 2006 and will take one year for full-time students and two years part time. Learners will have the choice to attend sessions in London or participate in distance learning.
The post-graduate Diploma in Mediation (DipM-ADR) will be dedicated to providing training in international ADR with a strong focus on mediation and conciliation. The Diploma will not only provide an understanding of the theoretical, practice and ethical problems relating to international mediation but will also provide a stepping stone for professionals wanting to become involved in international ADR.
Allan Connarty, Director of Operations at the CIArb said: “With the expansion of mediation and ADR across the globe, training institutions need to respond and formulate a qualification that is of a high standard for individuals involved in facilitating international disputes. Both the UK government and the European Commission actively support the development of mediation. The new Diploma will provide a new standard and a benchmark for the industry.”
Loukas Mistelis, Professor of Transnational Law and Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London said: “ We are proud to be working with the most respected global training institution to take mediation to the next level and ensure that industry growth is backed by solid education.”
