The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators opens branch in UAELondon, 11 March 2005 – The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) today announced the opening of its 31st international branch, in the United Arab Emirates. The initiative is part of CIArb’s strategy of enabling the business community to build trust, enhance investment and encourage growth in the Middle East. As part of its global expansion, CIArb promotes and facilitates the resolution of disputes by arbitration and alternative means of dispute resolution (ADR) for a wide variety of business and commercial sectors in the region.
CIArb currently has branches in Lebanon, Bahrain and Cairo, making the new branch the Institute’s fourth in the Middle East region and the 31st internationally. CIArb has strong links with domestic arbitral organisations and businesses in the region with 87 individual members at the UAE branch.
Richard Rodger, CIArb membership development manager, said: “The rapid development of the UAE branch reflects a fast-paced and dynamic commercial environment, one which requires the need for fair dispute resolution. Practitioners with the CIArb’s global qualifications and users of their arbitration and ADR services will benefit from the CIArb’s international network. Businesses can invest in the region with confidence that the very best practitioner is helping to resolve any dispute that may occur.”
Officers of the UAE Branch were appointed by an interim committee and members of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators at the Dubai World Trade Centre on February 8th, 2005. Essam Al Tamimi, the elected chairman, is the founder and managing partner of the largest independent law firm in the UAE, Al Tamimi & Company. The Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the ICC International Court of Arbitration (ICC) both welcome the elected officers and establishment of the new branch.
Rodger continued: “The UAE has the potential to serve the arbitration needs of the global economy. As a prime location connecting the East and West, it is a leading business centre in the Middle Eastern region as well as an ideal venue for commercial dispute resolution. It has the facilities and services of the world’s major international business centres, with highly rated communication, transport and accommodation services, coupled with all the attractions of a top tourist destination.”
The Branch is planning a full programme of events. Full details will be published on the Institute’s website (www.arbitrators.org) as soon as they become available.
