Committee steps forward!

CIArb’s INDIA BRANCH is about to rise from the ashes of its once active predecessor.

After a prolonged period of inactivity, some of the most highly regarded practitioners in India have come together to lead CIArb’s Indian revival. Lalit Bhasin, a Supreme Court lawyer, will lead the new India Branch Committee. Former Chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi (1973-77) and President of the Bar Association of India (2006–07) Lalit has received many prestigious awards. Notably, these have included:

Award for Distinction by the International Bar Association, October 1994
National Award for Excellence by All India Lawyers Forum for Civil Liberties, 2001
Award of Honour for Services to the Legal Profession and Commitment to the Rule of Law from the Prime Minister of India, December 2001

Lalit will be ably supported by other senior figures. Chandrakant Kamdar and Anil Shah have accepted the posts of Honorary Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The re-establishment of the India Branch follows India’s growing global economic importance and a series of high-profile visits by Michael Forbes Smith, CIArb’s Director General. In May 2007, Mr Smith joined a business delegation led by John Stuttard, Lord Mayor of the City of London, and in October 2007, attended the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institution (IFCAI) Conference, an organisation which comprises all major arbitral institutions in the world.

Anyone wanting to find out more or wishing to become involved with CIArb’s India Branch should contact the Branch Secretary, Chandrakant Kamdar (ckamdararbitrator@yahoo.co.uk).
